The “Parents and Carers Workspace” scheme is now in its third and final month, after St George’s ward councillors gave £2,500 to Hilldrop Community Association through Islington’s local initiative fund.

The community centre, in Hilldrop Road, has been hosting weekly classes for parents and carers of children under five. It aims to help the adults find a balance between childcare responsibilities and finding paid self-employment. The centre doubles as a crèche while the adults get to work.

Barbara Ludlow, head of Hilldrop Community Centre, said: “The response from parents and carers has been overwhelmingly positive. They are now feeling more confident about being self-employed.”

St George’s Cllr Tricia Clarke said: “For many parents and carers with young children, starting up your own business can be challenging. This original project is a great example of how, by working with the community, we can support more local people into work.”
